When I was about ten in 1961 I walked from the western side of Merthyr with some friends over the top of the mountain along the A465 to the reservoir house where we were provided with a good meal before the long trek home over the mountain. I was very weary when I got home. The next day I found that I was suffering from Scarlet Fever.
