MASTER INTEGRATED REPORT, The Ruperra–Machen Roman Complex, Caerphilly, 2025
Disgrifiadau
This report presents a comprehensive synthesis of all desk-based research, field observation, spatial analysis, artefact recovery, and landscape interpretation undertaken between 2025–2026 at Ruperra Home Farm, Plas Machen, and along the River Rumney. Drawing exclusively on non-invasive methods, it argues for the existence of a vast, highly organised Roman military-logistical landscape extending far beyond a conventional fort. Identified elements include a large planned military complex with monumental gates, an amphitheatre, extensive road networks, multiple cemeteries, a funerary processing structure, quarrying at Craig Ruperra, and an engineered riverine harbour system. Central to the interpretation is a sophisticated hydraulic network incorporating river re-routing, floodplain management, spring-fed water supply, bathhouses, and a large exercise or swimming channel. The report emphasises the coherence, scale, and engineering ambition of the landscape, suggesting long-term, high-status occupation and regional command significance. If substantiated through further survey, the complex would represent one of the most significant Roman archaeological discoveries in Wales, and potentially Britain.
