The 15-day voyage included seasickness, a submarine sighting near Gibraltar, and an air attack by German planes. Upon arrival in Phillipville, Algeria, Kingdom experienced harsh living conditions in canvas tents, including a thunderstorm and widespread illness. He was later stationed near El Guerra, close to Constantine, where the camp was muddy, cold, and primitive. Guard duty was difficult and theft by locals was common. He was hospitalized in Constantine due to illness and later injured his ankle playing rugby. His final transfer in this chapter was to Algiers, where he stayed at a racecourse camp. The area was under strict French colonial rule, and theft from military stores by locals continued to be a problem.
