His regiment was then deployed to Austria to deter Yugoslav annexation efforts, staying in a spa hotel, and conducting patrols. After returning to Italy, Kingdom was stationed in Milan, then transferred to Verona, and eventually joined the 1st Derbyshire Yeomanry, which took him to Egypt and later Libya. He trained as a Tank Gunnery Instructor in Heliopolis, Egypt, and became Regimental Gunnery Sergeant in Libya.His time in Libya included: encounters with cave dwellers; tribal feast in Mizda; observing camel caravans from Timbuktu; playing donkey polo during leave in Tripoli. In February 1947, he received news of his mother’s death but was unable to attend the funeral. He returned to the UK in August 1947, ending nearly five years of service. Kingdom reflected on the profound impact of the war, expressing gratitude for survival and sorrow for those who didn’t return.
