It is said that this is where pack horses carrying iron ore between Ystalyfera and the forge at Llandyfan rested.

In the book 'Annibynwyr Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen', by Llywelyn C. Huws 1942, one of the extracts from the GCG School Log Book reads; July 6, 1888--- "Rev. Mr Selby Jones visited the school and informed the children that his present of sweets would be distributed on the first fine day". July 11--- "Cleared up, so that the children were taken to Carregfilfaen [a bit of rock on the common] by the Rev.Mr Jones to receive the sweets as promised".
