'Statement made by David Howell now a servant with Wm Rees of Tanygraig near Velinvole Llanelly. For the year ending at last Allhallowtide I was servant with Mr. David Thomas of Pantygwenith from Llanelly parish. At the beginning of corn harvest I was going home to my breakfast and first saw Dai Cantwr, on the turnpike road near the Stag and Pheasant, he was standing in the middle of the road. I passed by him but said nothing to him. Shoni Scyborfawr was with him they were talking together I did not then know either of them. In about a fortnight afterwards I saw Dai Cantwr at Pantygwenith he came to the house & sat down by the fire & asked my master if he should have a bed there, my master said he might sleep with me if I was willing. I said the bed was his & he saw that he was willing Dai supped with the family & slept with me in a room upstairs. He slept with me also the following night. He came from time to time & slept many nights there and had food there. On the night that Spudders Bridge Gate was destroyed, between 9 & 10 o'clock Dd Vaughan servt at Soho was at the smithy David the smiths smithy near the 5 roads & I was there also. After Vaughan had finished his work there we both left & we went into the 'Stag' & drank a pint each, there was no one ... The mark (X) of the said David Howell'.
