Page six of the Western Mail & South Wales News, Wednesday 27 September 1939. At the bottom of the first column, continuing into the second column, is a letter announcing how a committee set up by the friends of Mabel Shaxby intend to use her memorial fund. In addition to a grant to assist Basque children, it is intended to make a "grant towards the upkeep of the International Room at 43, Charles-street, which the Society of Friends proposes to make available for the use of refugees in Cardiff."
Mable Emily Shaxby was born around 1885 and died 5 May 1939. She was a prominent figure in the peace movement and the educational life of Cardiff. The prayers at her memorial service at the Temple of Peace, Cathays Park were led by the Rev. W H Jefferson of Charles Street Congregational Church. Source: Western Mail 15th May 1939.
