Drawing by Falcon Hildred. Grangetown YMCA, Cardiff, 1986
Chalk on paper.
The Young Men's Christian Association was founded in London in 1844 and originally aimed to provide low-cost housing in a morally safe environment for young men migrating from rural areas to seek work in towns and cities. Grangetwon YMCA was opened in 1909. Falcon recorded the YMCA in Cardiff in 1986, and although the building still stands it is now used as the Grangetown Muslim Cultural Centre. The deep foreground shadow makes this one of Falcon's most dramatic images.
