The Red Lion, or 'Llanafan' as it is known locally, can be dated back to at least 1189 thanks to Gerald of Wales who, when travelling through Wales drumming up support for Richard the Lion Heart, recorded that he stayed in the inn at Llanafan Fawr.
The current Red Lion building dates back to about 1472, and is built around a cruck frame. Holes in the beams, and the building's shape, like an overturned boat, suggests that the beams were recycled from a dismantled naval ship in the Middle Ages.
The prime purpose of the building until the 1990s was as a farmhouse that also served ale.
