GLAMORGAN CONSTABULARY CONTINGENT AT COWBRIDGE.
Disgrifiadau
No information with it nor is it dated, but as a former policeman once stationed at Cowbridge, I recognise the building - which is located at the rear of Cowbridge town hall. The building is still there and operates as small shops.
Judging by the medals, I would suggest that it was taken between the first and second world wars. The officer are all Glamorgan Constabulary 'C' Division or Bridgend Division, of which Cowbridge was part.
I think that this is quite likely taken for one of the Annual Race Week events then held at Cowbridge. Race week was one of the most important horse racing events that was held in the country.
Back then, Cowbridge had its own railway station and railway 'specials' brought thousands of spectators. The last full race 'week' was held in 1939 for the weekly event. Pickpockets and thieves were prevelent, hence the need for a substantial police presence.
The photo shows the Mayor of Cowbridge, the Town Clerk, Mace bearers and of course, the contingent of police officer which included a Superintendent (on the Mayor's left, and an Inspector third to the right of the Mayor.
