My dear Gordon,

It is more than a month since
you wrote your letter to me. I am sorry I did
not send a word before especially as I have
no more to say than I should have. Since a
fortnight ago. Things are in an unpleasant
uncertainty. Publishers will not go on
giving me money for books except that
they now offer the usual hacks terms for
books to suit them - guides & works
on celebrated statesmen etc. The only
pleasure I get with all these revelations is
refusing the offers - I wrote 4
sentences to Fisher Erwin which is my
masterpiece of prose. 'Window' I have
done, & a dirty job & it has left me dirty.
I went to see it (to my regret) into the
Castle. - But really I am in a
quandary.
Before I forget it, Davies is now
