Disgrifiadau

Henry John Salter, known as Harry was a cafe proprietor and Impresionist and entertainer from Penarth. He was born in 1895 at 8 cliff street, and after Villette Salter died in childbirth, closely followed by her husband Albert of inflammation of the bowel (appendicitis), the children Henry (Harry), May and Violetta Salter (Cissie) were brought up by their fathers cousin George and Elizabeth Salter in Glebe Street (later capers seeds shop) , Penarth. Later they moved to Windsor road , Penarth.

Family used to run the two ice cream shops at the entrance to Penarth Pier. The children went to the church school in Penarth (near plassy street) which cost 1d a week.

Henry was in the first great war and eventually went to India as a batman, from where he brought back a porcupine quill box and a ring amongst other things.

Henry was involved in the first cinema in Penarth, then an ice cream parlour on Penarth sea front (now the Carlton). During the second war, Henry bought the Glendale hotel in Penarth (with May). Henry also ran a luncheon service to the green houses which used to stand in Dinas Powys opposite Bryn-y-don.

While at the Glendale , Henry was in a band call the Glendale Players with Rowena and Monty Sidford.   Newspaper cutting aug 26 1925: Penarth Carnival Hoax. The Beautiful "Queen". Why a £ 5 prize was returned. The true spirit of carnival was displayed at Penarth this afternoon in connection with the Penarth Football Club War Memorial fund. For the fete and gala it was decided to choose the Queen of Carnival for her beauty through the means of competition. Advertisment went forth inviting competitors to send in photographs which would be judged by a committeee of experts - ladies. A prize of £ 5 was offered for the successful competitor, and in due time the choice fell upon the owner of a charming photograph, Miss Ada Oaks. The secretary, Mr J. Lot Thorn, communicated the news to the owner of the photograph in the following terms: "Dear Miss Oaks - Please accept the heartiest congratulations of the committee on being selected from many applications, for the Carnival Queen for Fete and Galas. The details and arrangements with regard to this have been left in the hands of Mr. W. T. Paull, who will call upon you and keep you supplied with full information". When the call was proposed Miss Oaks was call fom town. A SHOCK. the disclosure of the owner of such feminine beauty in a carnival queen was made with the presentation of the prize. Miss Ada Oaks was no other than Harry Salter, of Penarth, a clever actor , who , by a simple make-up, and the aid of the photographer, hoaxed the beauty judges, and made amends for his deception by handing back the £ 5 prize money for the benefit of the funds. As a member on the general committee, he has contributed to the funds by selling autographed photographs of the Carnival Queen !. We have heard of beauty being skin deep, the question arises, is beauty Nature or Art ?. In this instance of the competition for the Carnival Queen art beat Nature. But the real spirit of carnival prevailed !

Jean Jones recalls that Harry used to eat with James Callaghan the MP at the Glendale and they had very litttle money so they used to share a plate of beans on toast!
