After I arrived in the shell-hole I pulled my equipment off I noticed that a bullet had gone right through my belt to my left hand side breast pocket, broke two of three pencils and the rest. I want you to thank Gladys Jones [?] for this until I get time to write to her a few words of thanks it was the testament she gave me when home on leave that stopped the Bullet from going to my heart, it stopped right in the centre of the little Testament ...".
