Derbyniwyd y llythyr yma gan deulu Archie Lee yn dilyn ei farwolaeth ar 10 Ebrill 1918. Roedd ei dad, Alfred Lee, wei ysgrifennu i ofyn am wybodaeth gan nad oedd wedi derbyn unrhyw ohebiaeth gan gwmni Archie ond mae'r ateb yn egluro pam nad oedd yn bosib derbyn y fath ohebiaeth. Transcript: Dear Mr Lee, I cannot say how sorry I am that you should have had no letter from your late son's company. It is most unusual that parents do not receive a letter from the O.C. Company but in this case there is the all too good reason for the silence as no officers came back - all being killed or wounded. Since April no officer of 'D' Company has rejoined the battalion and there is only one in the battalion who was in the company previous to the battle. He himself was not with his company at the time but I will tell him to make any enquiries that he can & let you know. Please accept my deepest sympathy with you in your grief. I feel sure that you will realise the difficulties of our position when out of a company of 8 officers & 130 men, no officers and only about 20 men returned. We can get no information or record ofthe fighting especially as the division was thrown in to stop a rout & was involved with troops already returning. The consequence is that the ground where your son & so many of his officers & comrades fought so magnificently is now just inside Boche lines. It may comfort you a little perhaps to know that his company behaved as you would have wished them. There was no though of retreat. They hung on till the last & literally died at their Guns.
