4. Big Pit colliery c.1910

Disgrifiadau

Big Pit colliery c.1910.
This picture shows the original woodenwinding gear at Big Pit. This was replaced by a steel frame in the 1930s when production of steel was at its peak in south Wales, offering astronger and cheaper alternative.
The wagons of coal lined up in the picture were waiting to be picked up by Nora the locomotive, or one or her sisters. Nora was one of five locomotives at Big Pit, named by the mine manager after his daughters. The sixth engine 'Toto' was named after his dog. Nora can still be seen at Big Pit today.
