John Griffiths RAF Pilot WW2
Disgrifiadau
This is a photograph of John Griffiths of Borth, Ceredigion, taken during World War Two. John was a fighter pilot in the RAF and flew Spitfire and Hurricane aeroplanes. He saw active service in Burma, fighting against the Imperial Japanese Army. John would often tell his younger cousin Nigel Hopkins about life in Burma. Nigel recalled John telling him about the Japanese Snipers firing up from the ground at the Hurricanes taking off and landing from air strips. Nigel himself went on to serve as a Photographer in the RAF from 1975 to 1984. In a twist of fete, Nigel was wounded in the leg, when IRA gunmen fired up from the ground at the Army Air Corps Beaver aeroplane that he was taking Photographs from over South Armagh in November 1979. Nigel's memoirs of his service in the RAF, supported my photographs, can be viewed on line in the Nigel Hopkins RAF collection at the West Wales Veterans Archive on the Peoples Collection Wales website.
