The Police of South Wales and the Great War: 1914-1918. Concluding the Story.

Disgrifiadau

In 2014 South Wales Police established a project to tie in with the start of the commemoration of the centenary of the First World War.

A project group was formed comprising of serving and retired staff and during the course of the next five years they undertook work to remember those policemen from South Wales Police’s predecessor forces of Glamorgan, Cardiff, Swansea, Merthyr and Neath who served during the war and especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

A considerable amount of material was produced by the project which was reflected in a series of booklets. Between 2014 and 2019 nine booklets have been produced, one for each year of the war together with three on the specific subjects of the Welsh Guards, Richard Thomas and Ernest Rollings. A Roll of Honour booklet has also been produced.

This tenth and final booklet concludes the stories told by the project and summarises what has been achieved since it began in 2014. It provides details of further police officers who were recognised for their gallantry, and tells the stories of some of the many officers who served in the armed forces during the war, who survived it and who have not been included in previous booklets. Additional photographs, ones which have come to light since the earlier booklets were produced, have also been included. Very importantly, this concluding instalment offers some final reflections on the war and its impact on the police of South Wales.
