Henry KOSTROMIN

of Swansea, Glamorgan

Picture and notes provided by Jean Homfeld of Washington State, USA.

Henry Kostromin was Jean's great uncle. He was born in 1887 in Swansea, the son of Alex Kostromin and Hannah Lindell. Alex Kostromin was a mariner who came from Sweden about 1881. He became a bicycle-maker and opened a bike shop at 84 Oxford Street, Swansea, naming his bikes "Oxford bikes". Henry was one of six boys. He and his wife Dorothy had two children, Gurlie and Aubrey. He died in 1957. His grandson Ken Kostromin gave Jean the photo.

Image 1:

Henry KOSTROMIN is the man in the middle of the photograph. Written across the bottom are the words:
Swansea - "Tipperary Club" - Outing to Rhossili, June 6th 1916.
(Rhosili is a favourite local beauty spot on the Gower Peninsula)

We found the following entry on page 128 of the 1910/11 edition of "Purrier's Swansea Directory" at Swansea Reference Library:

84 Oxford Street - Kostromin A., motor and cycle works (see Image 2)

Can you help Jean find out more about the photograph and about Henry Kostromin? Jean would like to know more about the Tipperary Club. If you think you recognise the event, the scene, or any of the people depicted in the photograph, Jean will be delighted to hear from you by e-mail.

Many thanks to Jean Homfeld for allowing me to use her old photograph.
