When Dylan Thomas and his family lived at the Boathouse at Laugharne, he did most of his writing in a small wooden shed, situated high above the Boathouse and accessed via some steep stone steps. The shed became known as his "writing shed".

In October 1953, Dylan Thomas flew to New York for his fourth and final visit to direct rehearsals for Under Milk Wood. He became ill soon after arriving, and lapsed into a coma from which he never recovered. He died on November 9, 1953 aged 39. His body was brought back to Wales and was buried in the graveyard of St Martin's Church, Laugharne.

Dylan's grave is marked by a simple white wooden cross. His wife Caitlin is buried with him.
