The Welsh Black Inn, named after a breed of Welsh cattle.

At the time of the 1881 census, the inn was known as the Black Lion. It is also identified by this name on the late 19th century Ordnance Survey map. In 1881, the inn was occupied by Leonard Jones, his wife and brother, a servant, and two lodgers, as shown in the following extract from the 1881 census:

A brick-built residence in the middle of the village. The road on the left leads westwards, over the railway bridge (see below).

After passing over the railway bridge, this unclassified road leads to the village of Clarach and the seashore at Clarach Bay, 1¼ miles to the west of Bow Street.
