Laugharne is a picturesque jumble of cottages and small houses set in winding streets. It was given its charter in AD 1307. It is famous for its links with the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas (1914-1953), for its castle, and for its Town Hall.

Even now, in 1998, the Court Leet and Court Baron meet here on alternate Mondays to discuss local issues. The Court Leet consists of a foreman and a jury of twenty men. The meeting is presided over by a Portreeve (mayor).
