Llantwit Major The Town Hall

Disgrifiadau

The name Town Hall is a misnomer as Llantwit Major has only recently given itself the status of a town. The building was originally the manorial court and home of the reeve. It is recorded that it was in a ruinous state during the reign of Henry VIII and was then restored. The court controlling the fairs and the markets were held there and the lower floor was said to have been taken up by shops. Subsequently it was variously used as a school, library, lock-up, butchers shop, mortuary, theatre and cinema. It was the Church Loft until leased to the Oddfellows friendly society in the middle of the 19th century. The clock was given by William Thomas to celebrate Quueen Victoria's Jubilee. Note the itinerant photographer's wagon.
