Audio clip from an oral history interview with Stephen Hamilton: The Jewish community in Merthyr, Cardiff, 9 November 2018

Disgrifiadau

This is an audio clip from an interview with Stephen Hamilton in which the Jewish community in Merthyr is discussed.

In his interview, Stephen talks about his time spent as a goalkeeper for the Maccabi team for Cardiff and indeed later on, for Great Britain. He also reminisces about his time spent in the charity ex-professionals' team, playing alongside former sportsmen such as Gareth Edwards and Tommy Davis, and of the embarrassment that he felt when being asked for autographs by fans who thought he was a famous person. During the course of the interview, Stephen also discusses his father's time as the doctor in Cardiff City Football Club, and how he met and aided Ida Nudel, a famous refusenik on a club trip to Moscow, something which, had he been caught, could have resulted in a banishment to the "salt-mines of Siberia" by the KGB. Finally, Stephen mentions his more recent involvement in the organisation and distribution of the Bimah magazine and of the difficulties that the Bimah magazine faces in organising advertising due to a lack of Jewish businesses in Cardiff.
