It was a British Christian tradition to celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit to Jesus' Disciples at Pentecost, with a Whitsun parade of witness.

This was marked, in Newport, by many churches walking together under their banners. Sometimes hymns were sung at the homes of people who were ill or infirm.

It was a very exciting time for the children, being the one time of the year when they would be sure of a new 'rig out', usually complete with gloves and hat. It was essential to look one's best.

After the walk there was usually a tea party and then sports (in Community House called 'Whitsun Fields').

Although this tradition has now more or less vanished locally, it still happens in other. parts of the country.
